Pertex Fabric Guide: Shield, Microlight, and When to Choose Something Else

Bottom line: if the garment needs to be light, wind-resistant, and weatherproof enough for the outdoors, Pertex is the right fabric family. Shield for waterproofness. Microlight for insulation-holding shells. Quantum if you're counting grams. But if the design needs drape, softness, or evening glamour, you're looking at the wrong fabric—velvet and viscose are the answer, not Pertex.

In my role coordinating fabric orders for technical apparel brands, I've handled 200+ rush orders in 11 years, including same-day turnarounds for outdoor startups. The biggest failures happen when someone picks a fabric category before reading the spec sheet. Here's the field guide I wish every client read before calling me.

What 200+ rush orders taught me

Last quarter alone, my team processed 47 rush orders with 95% on-time delivery. The one miss? A 2,000-meter order for a breathable shell was approved as "similar" to Pertex Shield, but it had a coating that peeled after the first wash. The client saved $1.20 per meter on the base fabric, then paid $13,000 in rework and rush shipping.

Another time, a client asked at 4:30 p.m. if we could get 300 meters of Pertex Shield to their cut-and-sew plant before 8 a.m. the next day. Normal turnaround is 10 days. We found 120 meters locally, air-shipped the remaining 180 meters overnight, and paid $740 in extra freight on top of the $11,000 base. The alternative was losing a $60,000 order.

That's why I've become obsessive about checklists. Five minutes of verification before ordering beats five days of correction after cutting. Take it from someone who has paid rush fees on a fabric that ended up in the reject bin.

If you've ever had a jacket returned because the "waterproof" fabric leaked at the seams, you know why the spec sheet matters.

Honestly, I'm not sure why some brands still spec a heavy 3-layer fabric for a spring running jacket when a 2.5-layer Pertex Shield could do the job in half the weight. My best guess is they got burned once by a fragile thin face fabric and never went back. The fear is understandable. The solution is testing, not overbuilding.

Pertex Shield vs. Pertex Microlight: the short version

Pertex Shield: waterproof when you need weather protection

Pertex Shield is the one with the membrane. It's a fully waterproof/breathable group of fabrics when the seams are taped. The Outdoor Research Pertex Shield jacket is a good example—2.5-layer, packable, with a face fabric that feels more like a windshell than a stiff hardshell. For running jackets, bike commuter shells, and travel gear, Shield is often the no-brainer.

Wait—I should be more precise: Shield is waterproof when the seams are taped. The face fabric can pass water column tests, but a needle hole is a needle hole. If your production line doesn't seam-seal, you'll get leaks. And plain Shield is not a bushwhacking shell; for that, you want Shield Pro or a heavier 3-layer construction.

People ask if Pertex is "as good as Gore-Tex" all the time. I don't play that game. Gore-Tex Pro is a sturdy specialist for alpine and military use. Pertex Shield is lighter and packs smaller, which makes it better for travel and running. For a 3-season hiking shell, both can work. The right answer depends on how much abrasion resistance and how many days of wet weather you expect.

Pertex Microlight: downproof, not waterproof

Pertex Microlight is a tightly woven nylon that keeps down and synthetic insulation in place. It's wind-resistant and handles a light sprinkle, but it's not intended for heavy rain. If a client asks for a puffy jacket that packs down to the size of a grapefruit, Microlight is the shell fabric that makes that possible. Treat it as an insulation-holding layer, not a storm shell.

There's also Pertex Quantum for ultralight sleeping bags. It's lighter and more compressible, but also softer and less abrasion-resistant. For most apparel, Microlight is the safer starting point.

When Pertex is the wrong call

Pertex is a performance fabric. That sounds obvious, but I've seen people try to use it for evening wear, sofa cushions, and even prom dresses (not joking). Its strength is in structure: tight weaves, precise membranes, and durable water repellent. Those same qualities make it feel less soft and less drapey than knit or woven fashion fabrics.

The Nike Tech Fleece pant

If someone says they want something like the Nike Tech Fleece pant, don't reach for Pertex. That pant is a smooth-faced knit fleece with a brushed back—warm, soft, and comfortable for everyday wear. But it's not windproof, it's not waterproof, and it won't compress into a technical shell. It's a lifestyle fabric. A Pertex wind layer over a fleece base will be more functional for cold weather, but the look and feel won't match.

Velvet suits for women

Velvet suits for women are another red flag. Velvet is plush, high-luster, and all about silhouette. It also acts like a sponge in rain. I've had clients ask if Pertex can be made to look like velvet for an event (yep, that happened). The honest answer is no. A membrane fabric has a crisp hand and a technical sheen. If you need red-carpet drama, use velvet. If you need rain protection, use Pertex. Don't mix the two.

What is viscose material feel like?

Every few weeks I get the same question: what is viscose material feel like? The short answer: it's smooth, cool, and drapey—somewhere between cotton and silk. It breathes well and falls nicely, but it wrinkles easily and has no stretch. Use it for blouses, dresses, and flowy suits. It is not a technical outdoor fabric. If your design calls for viscose, Pertex won't give you the drape. If your design calls for Pertex, viscose won't give you the durability.

The five-minute pre-order checklist

Before you approve any fabric order—especially a rush one—run through this:

  1. Waterproof or water-resistant? If the spec says Shield, it can be fully waterproof. If it says Microlight or Quantum, it is not. Pick the wrong one and warranty returns will eat your margin.
  2. Weight and denier? A 10D face might be perfect for a running vest; a 30D face makes more sense for a pack. Get a ballpark by asking for grams per square meter.
  3. Drape and hand feel? Pertex has a crisp, tight hand. If you want soft, flowing, or plush, you're in the wrong category. Drape is a deal-breaker in fashion fabric.
  4. Care requirements? A membrane jacket is not a cotton shirt. Some washes strip DWR. Plan for consumer care.
  5. Proof for green claims? Per FTC Green Guides (16 CFR Part 260), a "recycled" or "eco" claim must be substantiated. Keep the certification file with your order.

And when you're sending samples fast, know the shipping rules before promising an overnight in-hand date. USPS First-Class Mail large envelope (1 oz) costs $1.50 as of January 2025 (usps.com/stamps), but a 1 oz letter can't be more than 1/4 inch thick. If your swatch folder is thicker, it's a package—and that changes the timeline.

People think a higher denier automatically means more durable. Actually, weave density and coating matter more. A tightly woven 20D Pertex face can outperform a loose 40D plain nylon in tear tests because the yarns are packed tighter. Check the construction, not just the number.

Boundaries and exceptions

I'm not saying Pertex is the only fabric you'll ever need. Gore-Tex still makes sense for heavy alpine use. A softshell like Polartec is often better for high-exertion, cold-weather activities where you need stretch and breathability over waterproofing. And if you're making a luxury fashion item, the consumer may expect a matte outer shell that is not Pertex's crisp hand. Fabric choice is about tradeoffs, not hierarchy.

For high-output sports, sometimes a simple wind-resistant micro-shell beats a fully waterproof jacket, because it doesn't trap sweat. Pertex Quantum Air (a more breathable weave) is a good middle ground. But you need to know what the user is doing: a runner who's going to sweat hard for an hour has different needs than a commuter standing in the rain for half an hour.

People assume a higher price means better fabric. Actually, price is a result of performance and consistency, not the other way around. The expensive fabric is only "better" if it matches your specific end-use. Paying for Shield Pro when Microlight would do is just over-engineering.

Not every fabric problem can be solved with Pertex, and not every last-minute order should be rushed. But the orders that end up in the reject bin are almost always the ones where someone skipped the spec sheet. In a 48-hour window, you don't have time for a mistake. So make the first choice count.
