Pertex vs Gore-Tex and Every Fabric Question That Comes With a Deadline

In my role coordinating fabric orders for outdoor brands—and, some weeks, for urgent direct requests—I've handled more than 200 rush orders over eight years. The lesson that stuck: there is no best fabric. There is only the fabric that matches your situation, your timeline, and your client's definition of 'good enough.'

In March 2024, I got a call 36 hours before a product launch. The client needed 200 yards of breathable shell fabric, normally a two-week turnaround. We found a regional warehouse with Pertex Shield in stock, paid the rush freight, and made the launch. The alternative was showing up with samples cut from the wrong fabric.

First, decide which scenario you're in

Before comparing brands or ratings, put yourself in one of three buckets:

  • You need real storm protection for a product launch, outdoor shoot, or client event.
  • You need warmth for a commute or event, and rain is a 'maybe' rather than a 'definitely.'
  • You need a fabric that looks and feels right for the brand image.

The mistake I see most often is treating all three the same. People obsess over a waterproof rating they don't need, then ignore the hand feel that actually sells the product. Or they buy satin denim because it looks premium and expect it to survive a mountain downpour. It won't.

Scenario A: You need real downpour protection

If you're standing in eight hours of rain and wind, you're in waterproof-shell territory. This is where the 'Pertex vs Gore-Tex' question comes up almost every time I talk gear.

Gore-Tex is the established choice. It's used in everything from serious mountaineering jackets to workwear. Quality is consistent, and it's easy to find. For many projects, it's the safe answer.

Pertex, especially Pertex Shield, is my go-to when weight and packability matter more than absolute ruggedness. The Pertex Shield waterproof rating I've seen most often on garments is around 20,000mm hydrostatic head. That means the fabric can withstand a column of water 20 meters high before leaking. In practical terms, that is serious rain protection. But before I put that in a spec sheet, I check the exact garment: Pertex Shield Pro is built for more abuse, and some lighter Shield fabrics may have different numbers. Always verify the hangtag or technical spec sheet.

So, Pertex vs Gore-Tex, which is better? Depends on your failure mode. If you need to shove the jacket into a backpack and not think about it, Pertex wins. If you need a jacket that'll hold up to pack abrasion and years of use, Gore-Tex might be the better call. I do not say that lightly. I've seen too many people buy a 100-gram ultralight shell and then complain it doesn't behave like a 400-gram mountaineering jacket.

Once, I quoted 20,000mm on a Pertex Shield garment without checking the actual tech pack. It was 10,000mm. The client caught it. I should have known better, but I assumed the brand name meant the spec. That's the same trap you'll hit if you buy based on logos alone.

And while we're on waterproof claims, there's a compliance angle. Per FTC advertising guidelines (ftc.gov), a claim like 'waterproof' must be truthful and substantiated. So don't just take the word printed on a tag. Ask for the test method and the number. A 10,000mm rating is different from 20,000mm. The marketing can feel similar. The spec is not.

Honestly, I'm not sure why some brands still avoid publishing their waterproof rating. My best guess is that they want to avoid direct comparison tables. But if you're in a buying decision, get the number.

Scenario B: You need warmth tomorrow morning

For the person searching fleece jackets near me, the decision is usually about speed, not specs. You need something warm today or by tomorrow. In that case, local is your friend. I've ordered fleece online with 'estimated delivery' and watched it arrive three days after the event. The local outdoor shop got me a fleece jacket in one hour. That's the trade-off: you may not get the exact brand, but you get certainty.

Fleece is a great midlayer. It insulates even when damp, it breathes, and it's forgiving. But it is not a waterproof shell. Rain will pass through it. Wind will cut through it. If you're planning to stand outside in sleet, a fleece alone won't be enough.

This is also a good place to answer a question I get constantly: is microfiber waterproof? No, not on its own. Microfiber is a synthetic fiber, usually polyester or nylon, woven tightly. Some microfiber jackets have a DWR finish or coating that makes them water-resistant. That's different from waterproof. For a light drizzle, a treated microfiber jacket might be fine. For a downpour, it's not. The safest way to think about it: if there's no membrane and no taped seams, it's a windbreaker, not a rain jacket.

The 'microfiber is waterproof' belief comes from an era when tight-weave synthetic jackets seemed to shed water better than cotton. That's true, but shedding light rain is not the same as keeping you dry in a storm.

If you're buying fleece for a client with a logo, think about how it will look after the first wash. Cheaper fleece pills and loses shape. That's where quality perception comes in: the client feels the fabric before they read the spec. A slightly higher price per unit often saves the brand-impression cost of a jacket that looks tired six weeks later.

Scenario C: You need the right look, not the right membrane

Now, the fabric I love for a different reason: satin denim fabric. If you're designing a fashion jacket, a tote, or any piece where the first impression is the whole point, satin denim is a look. I've never fully understood why the outdoor industry ignores it—maybe because it's too 'fashion' for the gear crowd. But I've seen a product line create more buzz with a satin denim finish than with another black shell. The gloss reads as premium under event lighting (finally, a fabric that doesn't photograph like a garbage bag).

But know what you're buying. Satin denim has no waterproof rating. It's a weave construction built for drape and a soft, subtle sheen. If you need water resistance, you'd need to treat it with a separate DWR finish, and even then, I'd keep it away from heavy rain.

That's okay. Not every fabric needs to be technical. The mistake is asking a fabric to do two contradictory jobs. If the job is 'brand image at a launch event,' satin denim might be the smartest choice in the room. If the job is 'keep this person dry on a mountain ridge,' it is not.

When I switched a client from a budget poly-cotton blend to premium satin denim for a small collection, the feedback wasn't 'nice denim.' It was 'this feels more expensive.' Same factory, same cut, different fabric. The dollar-per-yard difference translated into a noticeably better first impression.

How to judge your own situation

If you're still unsure which bucket you're in, ask yourself three questions:

  1. Will this fabric be outside in rain for more than 15 minutes? That's Scenario A, or Scenario B with a shell over the fleece.
  2. Is speed more important than brand? Then 'fleece jackets near me' is a perfectly good starting point.
  3. Is this fabric part of a product where people will touch it before they test it? That's the hand-feel scenario, which is where satin denim and other lifestyle finishes live.

Deadlines complicate the decision, but they don't change the fundamentals. In my role coordinating urgent orders, I've paid $400 in rush shipping and still told a client we needed to switch from a 3-layer laminate to a 2-layer one because only the 2-layer was in stock. It still performed. The spec was slightly different, but the outcome was success.

So before you ask 'is this fabric good?', ask 'what is the worst way this can fail?' If you're gonna make a mistake, make it early—and around the least expensive variable. That's how you deliver a product that feels right, works right, and gets there on time.
