I'm the office administrator for a 42-person outdoor apparel company. I manage purchasing—roughly $300,000 a year in fabrics, trims, and packaging. I'm not a textile engineer. But I'm also the one who ends up explaining why we can't just order 'pertex waterproof' by name. This is the story of how I learned that phrase is almost meaningless, and the checklist I use now before placing any fabric order.
In fall 2022, our design lead asked me to source a shell for a new rain jacket. Her exact words were: 'Find something pertex waterproof.' I thought I understood what that meant. I sent a request to one of our trusted suppliers. Within a day, they replied: 'Which Pertex family? Quantum, Shield, or Shield Pro? What face fabric weight? Is this for a 2-layer or 3-layer jacket?' I didn't even know why those questions mattered.
Luckily, the supplier caught the problem before I placed a PO. They said the fabric they'd initially quoted, a light Pertex Quantum ripstop, would be comfortable for a down jacket but not the right choice for a rain shell. It was water-resistant, not truly waterproof.
The surface problem: 'Pertex' is a brand, not a spec
Pertex makes excellent technical fabrics, but it's a brand with several product families. You can't just write 'pertex waterproof' and expect a single fabric. For example, Pertex Quantum and Quantum Air are very light, compressible, downproof fabrics with a DWR finish. Great for an insulated jacket, but not designed to keep you dry in a downpour. Pertex Shield and Shield Pro are the families that include a waterproof membrane. Between those, you still need to choose the construction, weight, and face fabric.
This distinction shows up in ready-made garments too. People see a 'Nanamica Pertex field jacket' and assume it's a rain shell. Nanamica makes beautiful field jackets with Pertex fabric, but a field jacket marked 'weather-resistant' is different from a hard shell with a taped waterproof membrane. If I remember correctly, the Nanamica one I looked at last spring was described as weather-resistant, not waterproof. That's a big clue.
What I actually overlooked: waterproofing is a system, not a single layer
When I finally looked at the technical side, the real issue wasn't about the fabric family. It was about how waterproofness works. A jacket is waterproof only when all the layers and seams work together: the face fabric, the membrane, the DWR treatment, the seam tape, and the way zippers and openings are designed.
What we call waterproof fabric is usually a face fabric laminated to a membrane. In the lab, a sample of that flat fabric gets a hydrostatic head rating—how much water pressure it can hold before leaking. But a jacket isn't flat fabric. Needle holes from stitching can let water through unless the seams are taped or welded. The zipper can leak unless there is a flap. The membrane can get punctured if the face fabric is too thin for the intended use. Even the DWR finish matters: once it wears off, the face fabric wets out, which can make the jacket feel cold and heavy and affect breathability.
So the phrase 'pertex waterproof' was only describing one piece of a puzzle. That's the deeper reason why buying off a two-word spec is so dangerous.
The price of a two-word spec
In early 2023, we were developing a sample production run for an alpine shell. This time I did everything better. I specified 'Pertex Shield Pro 3L, 30 denier face' on the order and requested test samples. The factory's sample came back looking good on the outside. But our technical lead put it on a rain tester and found water seeping through the shoulder seam after a few minutes.
Fortunately, that was just a sample. We still had time to fix the seam taping. But it made me think about what would've happened if we'd jumped straight to the full run—around 800 jackets. The direct cost would've been substantial; the reputational cost would've been worse. If I ordered a fabric based solely on 'pertex waterproof,' we'd have shipped a product that leaked. Should mention: the fabric wasn't the problem. The problem was the assumption that waterproof fabric automatically means a waterproof garment.
The same label trap shows up in other materials
Once you start noticing this, you see it everywhere. A colleague asked me last summer, 'What is silk satin fabric?' Silk is a natural fiber, but satin is a weave structure. Silk satin is one particular combination; polyester satin is another, and the performance is completely different. Similarly, when a buyer asks about 'linen cargo pants women,' the word linen only tells you the fiber. It doesn't tell you whether the linen is garment washed, what weight it is, or whether the pants have enough ease for movement. And if someone says 'denali fleece jacket,' they're talking about a specific famous style, not a generic category. A fleece jacket that's 'like a Denali' may have a different shell face, different insulation, and different weather resistance.
For me, the pattern is always the same. A product family name is a useful starting point, but it's not a performance guarantee.
A short checklist before I buy Pertex waterproof now
The checklist that saved us is boring, but it works:
- Write the full expected construction on the request, not just 'pertex waterproof.' For example: 'Pertex Shield Pro 3L, 30 denier face, seam tape, HH target in line with the project brief.'
- Ask for a technical datasheet. Look for hydrostatic head and breathability values, and note the test method.
- Require a finished garment sample with seam taping, not just a fabric swatch.
- Test the sample in the way it will be used—under a stream of water, with movement, for a realistic amount of time.
- Remember that DWR is a factory finish, not a membrane. It helps water bead off, but it's not what makes a garment waterproof.
This approach should be common sense, but it took me nearly making a costly mistake to adopt it. Our situation is a small apparel manufacturer with orders in the hundreds of units. If you're buying one garment for yourself, the stakes are lower, but the logic is the same: look for the membrane, check seam taping, and don't assume a brand name is the same as a spec. I like Pertex products and use them regularly. The words 'pertex waterproof' just weren't enough—and as of early 2025, they still aren't. Check current product pages and verify your own performance requirements before you commit.
