There's No Single 'Best Fabric' (and That's Okay)
I'm a quality and brand compliance manager at an outdoor apparel company. I review every garment before it reaches customers—roughly 200 items per season, sometimes more. Over four years of doing this, I've rejected about 10% of first production runs in 2024 alone, usually for stitch density issues or mislabeled fiber content. So fabrics are kind of my whole thing.
And the question I get asked most—from friends, from family, from smaller brands we work with—is some version of: "What's the best fabric?" Or: "Is this fabric good?" Or my favorite: "Is knit fabric good for summer?"
My honest answer? It depends. There's no universal winner. A Pertex Quantum down coat is brilliant until the temperature hits 70°F. Bamboo viscose pants are ridiculously comfortable until you get caught in the rain. Linen shirts breathe beautifully but wrinkle if you look at them wrong. So the real question isn't "what's the best fabric," it's "what do you actually need this garment to do?"
Here are the main scenarios I deal with in my daily work, and what I'd actually check before buying into each one.
Scenario A: You Need Warmth Without Bulk—Pertex Jackets and Down Coats
If you're backpacking, cycling in cold weather, or heading somewhere genuinely cold, the lightweight-insulation category is where Pertex jackets live. Pertex makes several fabric families, and it matters which one you're looking at. Quantum and Quantum Air are ultralight, downproof fabrics for down jackets and sleeping bags. Shield is the waterproof-breathable line. They're different products for different use cases. (Note to self: I really should publish a side-by-side of those two lines—this comes up way more than it should.)
I reviewed the Pertex Quantum Air bal collar down coat as part of our seasonal quality audit (this was back in 2024). The shell is almost impossibly light—I don't have the spec sheet in front of me and I'm not a textile engineer, so don't hold me to this, but Quantum fabrics typically sit in the 25–40 g/m² range. You barely feel it in your hand. But here's what I actually look for:
What I check on a down jacket
- Downproofness. Run your palm across the fabric. If feathers poke through the shell, that's a quality failure, not some "natural quirk." Feathers migrate through fabrics that aren't tightly woven or properly coated, and over a season they'll end up poking holes in the shell.
- Baffle alignment. Sewn-through baffles are fine for warmth-to-weight. But the seam alignment has to be straight—especially on ultralight fabrics where there's zero room for error. Misaligned baffles mean cold spots and make the garment look off. I've rejected batches where the quilting lines were visibly off by only 2mm.
- Fabric hand feel vs. durability. Ultralight is great until you bushwhack through branches. For a jacket that'll see tree branches, backpacks, and general friction, I'd pick a Pertex jacket with a slightly heavier Quantum weave or a ripstop face fabric. It's a trade-off, and you need to know which side you're on.
One thing I can't speak to—and I'm not going to pretend otherwise—is the long-term behavior of membranes in waterproof garments. I'm not a chemist, so I can't explain what happens inside a membrane after three years in storage. What I can tell you from the inspection table is that waterproof claims should come with specifics. Per FTC advertising guidelines (ftc.gov), performance claims have to be substantiated. If a jacket says "waterproof," the brand should be able to tell you how they tested it. A brand that gives you the test method is way more trustable than one that just prints a bold word on the label.
Scenario B: You Run Hot—Men's Linen Clothing
If you're buying for hot, humid summers and you want something that feels like wearing a slightly improved bedsheet, men's linen clothing is probably your answer. Linen is flax fiber. It's hollow, so it moves moisture off your skin and lets air pass through. It's genuinely breathable in a way that a lot of synthetic "cooling" shirts aren't.
But linen gets a bad rap for two honest reasons: wrinkles and a stiff first feel. The wrinkles are real, and they're basically the deal-breaker for a lot of men. "I look like I slept in this," they say. Yeah. That's linen. It's not a defect, but I get why it's not for everyone.
Here's something vendors won't tell you: the breathability of linen depends less on the fiber itself and more on the weave and weight. A tightly woven, thick linen suit is still going to be hot—just less hot than a synthetic suit. If you actually want air moving, look for an open weave and a lighter weight (around 150–180 g/m² for shirts). Washed linen is soft from day one. Unwashed linen that feels like sandpaper gets soft eventually, but it takes time—which is fine if you're patient, and kind of a red flag if you're not.
Quality checks on linen: slubs (the little thicker spots in the yarn) are natural and usually intentional. Loose threads, skipped stitches, or uneven seams aren't. And check the fiber content. "Linen blend" can mean anything from 70% linen to 25% linen. If you want linen, buy at least 50%—ideally 100%—and treat the added stretch as a wrinkle-reduction compromise, not an upgrade.
Side note, because this matters to me: if you're a smaller men's clothing brand thinking about a linen program, do a pilot run before committing to a big order. I've worked with vendors who treat a 50-piece order the same as a 5,000-piece order, and those relationships are gold. When I was starting out, the suppliers who took my tiny sample orders seriously are the ones I still buy from at twenty times the volume. Small doesn't mean unimportant—it means potential.
Scenario C: You Want Soft, Everyday Comfort—Bamboo Viscose Pants
Bamboo viscose pants are having a real moment, and honestly, they deserve a chunk of the hype. The fabric is soft, drapes nicely, and hangs without clinging. For lounging, commuting, or offices with a loose dress code, bamboo viscose pants are legitimately comfortable. If comfort is your priority, this is a solid choice.
But here's something many consumers miss: bamboo viscose is rayon. The bamboo is chopped, its cellulose is dissolved and regenerated, and it's spun back into fiber. The result is a lovely, breathable rayon. It's not, in the fiber-content sense, "bamboo."
Per FTC guidance on bamboo textiles (ftc.gov), if a product is made from bamboo rayon, calling it "bamboo fiber" on the label can be misleading—it should be disclosed as rayon.
What this means for you: check the actual fiber content and don't assume the tag tells the whole story. I'm not a chemist, so I can't walk you through the viscose process in any more detail. What I can tell you from physical inspection is how the fabric behaves:
What I check beyond the label
- Shrinkage. Viscose is famous for shrinking when washed hot. A quality pair of bamboo viscose pants should come pre-washed so the garment keeps its shape. If your perfect-fitting pants turn into floods after the first wash, that's a production failure, not your laundry skills.
- Seam slippage. Slippery woven fabrics like viscose can slide at the seams—the yarns pull apart and leave gaps where the thread goes. Run your fingers along the inner thigh seam. If the fabric puckers or slides apart easily, it'll wear out way faster than it should.
- Water marks. Viscose doesn't love water. A few drops of rain can leave dark spots that are hard to get out. And be careful with "spill-proof" claims that aren't backed by a test method. (See the FTC point about substantiation above. Basically, if a claim sounds too good to be true, ask how they tested it.)
(Mental note: I really should publish our wash-test data. The shrinkage numbers on bamboo viscose keep surprising people.)
If you're a small brand thinking about bamboo viscose: it's actually a good fabric to start with in small batches, because it's affordable and drapes well in simple patterns. Order swatches, wash them three times, and measure them against the original spec. That tells you more than any sales rep's pitch. And don't let a high minimum order quantity scare you off before you ask. A factory that makes room for a small customer is a factory worth keeping.
Scenario D: The Perennial Question—Is Knit Fabric Good for Summer?
Let's settle this one properly, because it keeps coming up. The short answer: sometimes. The long answer: "knit" is a construction category, not a fiber. Your t-shirt is a knit. Your sweater is a knit. Your swim trunks are a knit. Asking "is knit fabric good for summer" is like asking "are vehicles good off-road?" Some are. Some really, really aren't.
The popular assumption is that knit fabric is bad for summer because it's stretchy and holds heat. That's the backwards part—the real causation is about fiber and density, not the knit structure. A loose, open knit in cotton or linen stays cool because air physically moves through the loops. A dense, tight knit in polyester traps heat. And a tightly woven polyester shirt is also hot—because it's polyester and dense, not because someone wove it instead of knitting it. So if you hold up a light cotton knit tee and you can see daylight through it, it'll breathe. The word "knit" on the label tells you almost nothing by itself.
From an inspection perspective, here's my rule: hold the fabric up to the light. If light passes through, air can pass through. (Unless it's a membrane laminate, but that's a different rabbit hole.) That quick test tells you more about summer suitability than any label. Then check the fiber: natural fibers in an open structure are your safest bet for hot days.
One caveat on sweat management: a lightweight linen knit lets heat out but can absorb sweat and feel damp. A wool-blend or synthetic knit with an open mesh structure might feel less airy at first but keep you drier after twenty minutes of movement. I'm not 100% sure how to translate "breathable" into one number—take this with a grain of salt—but in my experience, people overweight how a fabric feels in the first five seconds and underweight how it feels after an hour.
How Do You Know Which Scenario You're In?
Here's a simple way to sort it out. Ask yourself three things:
- Where will this garment get the most use? Cold trails, hot city sidewalks, the couch, or everything at once?
- Which failure are you most afraid of: freezing, overheating, looking rumpled, or just feeling physically uncomfortable?
- How much maintenance are you willing to accept? And be honest—there's no shame in knowing you won't iron anything.
If your answers point to "cold outdoors, freezing, packability matters," a Pertex Quantum down jacket is a strong choice. "Hot and humid, overheating, wrinkles are fine" leads to linen. "Lounging, softness, minimal maintenance" points to bamboo viscose pants. And if you're shopping for a warm-weather shirt, skip the "knit vs. woven" debate and judge the specific garment by its fiber and fabric density.
Quality Is Quality, at Any Scale
If I've learned anything from years of inspecting garments, it's that the price tag is a weak signal. I've reviewed $400 jackets with skipped stitches and $120 jackets that were beautifully made. I've approved small-batch bamboo viscose pants from a two-person brand and rejected first runs from major labels. The only reliable signal is what you check and test yourself.
Whether you're a consumer deciding between a Pertex down coat and bamboo viscose pants, or a small brand placing a first fabric order, two things are true: the right fabric is the one that fits your actual scenario, and small customers deserve the same quality and respect as big ones. Those two principles have guided every call I've made at the inspection table.
