Fabric Quality Checklist: 7 Checks to Run Before Production

When I first started in fabric quality, I assumed the more expensive fabric was automatically the better one. Three rejected batches and one very expensive redo later, I learned that "expensive" and "correct" are two very different things.

I'm a quality compliance manager at Pertex. I review every fabric batch before it goes to our brand partners—roughly 200 unique items a year. Maybe 180, I'd have to check the system. But the point is, I've seen what happens when fabric checks get skipped. This checklist applies to any technical or natural fabric you're putting into production, whether it's a Pertex Shield rain shell or a simple pair of linen pants.

If you've ever had a batch arrive that looked nothing like the sample you approved, you know the sinking feeling. Here's the 7-point checklist I use. It takes about 30 minutes per batch and has saved us an estimated $8,000 in potential rework since I formalized it in 2023.

5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction. Full stop.

Check 1: Weigh the fabric—don't trust the label

Fabric weight gets mislabeled more often than you'd think. In Q1 2024, we received a batch of what was supposed to be 40g/m² Pertex Quantum fabric. It weighed 47g—no, 46g, I'm mixing it up with another batch from the same supplier. Either way, it was 15% over spec. That would have made the final jacket noticeably heavier and thrown off the packability math.

Cut a 10cm × 10cm sample, weigh it on a precision scale, multiply by 100 to get GSM. Do this before cutting, not after. If the weight is off, everything downstream—fill power for down jackets, packability claims, seam strength specs—gets skewed.

Check 2: Verify waterproofing claims with your own hands

Pertex Shield is our weatherproof fabric line. But any fabric can claim waterproofing on paper. The question is whether the laminate actually holds up under pressure.

Here's the practical test: put the fabric over a cup, pour water in, press down with your finger. If water beads and rolls off, you're good. If it soaks through, that's a problem no lab certificate is going to explain away.

There's a legal angle, too. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), "waterproof" claims must be truthful and substantiated. If you can't back it, don't print it on the label.

Check 3: Test stretch and recovery—not just stretch

Does polyester material stretch? This is the most common fabric question I get. Plain polyester: minimal stretch, around 5-10% depending on the knit structure. Polyester with spandex or elastane: 20-40% is typical.

But stretch is half the story. Recovery matters more. Here's the test: take a 5cm strip, stretch it to 15cm, hold for 30 seconds, release. If it springs back to 5cm (or within 0.5cm), the recovery is good. If it stays at 6-7cm, your garments will bag out at the knees and elbows before the first season ends.

I tested two supplier samples in 2023: one recovered fully, the other stayed permanently stretched. Both claimed "good stretch." Only one was fit for production. The 30-second test cost nothing. The wrong order would have cost thousands.

Check 4: Inspect the weave under a loupe

This is the step almost everyone skips. It's the "obvious" one, so nobody does it.

Count threads in three places across the roll: near the selvage, in the middle, and at the opposite edge. If the thread count varies by more than 5%, you'll see visible defects in solid-colored garments, especially in large panels like jacket backs.

Pertex Diamond Fuse uses a hybrid ripstop weave that stops tears from running. It's genuinely interesting to inspect—you can see the reinforcement threads running through the structure. But the principle applies to any fabric: inspect the construction, don't just trust the spec sheet.

Check 5: Compare hand feel against a physical reference

Hand feel is subjective, so make it objective. Keep an approved reference swatch for every fabric. Lay the new batch next to the reference. If it feels stiffer, thinner, or slicker, the manufacturer changed something—and you need to know what.

This matters for natural fabrics just as much as synthetics. For example, men's linen pants. Linen varies wildly between harvests. If you're ordering fabric for a white linen outfit for men—a summer suit, maybe—the drape and texture on arrival might not match the sample. Sometimes it's better, sometimes worse. But you want to find out before you cut 500 pieces, not after.

Check 6: Run a quick DWR test

Durable water repellent (DWR) coatings fail. It's not a matter of if, but when. The test: pipette a few drops of water onto the face fabric. Watch the contact angle. Water should bead and roll off. If it flattens and soaks in within 30 seconds, the DWR wasn't applied or cured correctly.

Do this in at least 5 spots across the roll. Consistency matters as much as performance. Per FTC Green Guides, labeling something "water-resistant" needs to be substantiated—and a coating that fails after one wash is a liability.

Check 7: Review compliance docs before cutting

This is the one I learned the hard way. In 2022, we went into production on 8,000 units of fabric that passed every physical test. But there was an environmental claim in the marketing materials we couldn't fully substantiate. The fiber was technically recyclable, but the laminate layer meant most facilities wouldn't accept it.

Per FTC Green Guides, calling something "recyclable" requires that at least 60% of consumers have access to facilities that can actually recycle it. We were nowhere near that. The paperwork review that would have caught this? Thirty minutes. The redo? $22,000 and a delayed launch.

Common mistakes I still see

  • Trusting "same supplier as last time." Suppliers change yarn sources, finishes, and coatings without telling you. The spec sheet says one thing; the physical roll says another.
  • Testing one sample from a roll. Fabric varies across width and length. Test multiple spots, especially for coatings and color.
  • Ignoring natural fiber variance. Linen, cotton, and wool all vary by batch. Build tolerances into your specifications instead of assuming consistency.
  • Skipping the recovery test because "it's just a shell jacket." Bagging is real. Recovery is measurable. Don't skip it.

I still mess up. Last year, I approved a batch without running the DWR test because we were behind schedule. It came back from the partner with a failed DWR complaint. Redo cost: about $3,500, though I might be misremembering the exact figure. The 5-minute test would have caught it. The downside of running the test is 5 minutes of effort. The downside of skipping it: $3,500 and a reputation hit. The math isn't close.

Take the 30 minutes per batch. It's the cheapest insurance you'll buy this year.
