2L Pertex Unlimited Field Jacket vs. Diamond-Knit Fleece: A Fabric Inspector's Side-by-Side

Why I put these two jackets in the same room

For the past four years, I have been the person who reviews fabric before it becomes a jacket. My team looks at roughly 200 styles a year, and I have rejected around nine percent of first production attempts. Not because I enjoy sending things back. Because a small mistake in one run becomes a big warranty problem in someone's closet.

I get asked about Pertex constantly. Sometimes it is behind a mountain shell; sometimes it is in a streetwear drop like Palace Pertex. The fabric brand matters far less than how that fabric is cut, laminated, and seam-sealed. A logo does not make rain run off a collar.

In this comparison, I want to put two very different garments next to each other: a 2L Pertex Unlimited field jacket and a navy blue fleece jacket made with diamond knit fabric. If you are choosing a shoulder-season jacket, they are competing for the same hanger space and the same budget.

The framework I use before comparing anything

When I compare jackets, I do not start with price. I start with three questions: Does the face fabric handle the conditions? Does the garment move moisture when you are active? What does this cost after five seasons, not five minutes?

That third question is the one most buyers skip. A jacket can look cheap on the receipt and get expensive by the time it pills, fades, or loses its DWR. The list price is a down payment. Total cost is what you pay per season.

Weather resistance: Pertex face vs. diamond knit

Let's get one thing straight: Pertex is not a single magic fabric. It is a range of technical face fabrics, mostly woven nylon, designed for different jobs. A 2L Pertex Unlimited field jacket uses a face fabric that has been engineered to be lightweight and abrasion resistant, then bonded to an inner layer. In rain and wind, that face fabric is doing most of the work. The real magic is in the weave density, the yarn quality, and the DWR finish on the outside.

Diamond knit fabric is the opposite approach. The raised diamond shape is not just a surface detail. It is an air-trapping structure. In a navy blue fleece jacket, that structure makes the jacket feel warmer under a calm sky. But knit loops are open. Wind passes through them much faster than it passes through a tightly woven technical nylon. A fleece with no windproof membrane is not a field jacket. It is a warm layer with a limited territory.

My verdict in this dimension is not close. The Pertex field jacket wins weather resistance. That is not a knock on the fleece. It simply means you should not treat a diamond-knit fleece as an all-purpose shield.

Breathability: does rayon fabric breathe and why that question misses the point

Breathability is the most abused word in garment labels. In a textile lab, there are two different tests. One measures air passing through the fabric. The other measures water vapor escaping through it. They are not the same thing.

Does rayon fabric breathe? In the loosest sense, yes. Rayon is a cellulosic fiber, and it does not seal heat the way a vinyl-coated nylon does. But rayon also absorbs moisture, loses strength when wet, and dries slowly. So the real question is not whether air can move through it. It is whether that fabric can move sweat away from your skin and still protect you when the wind arrives. For that job, I would choose almost any decent synthetic technical fabric above rayon, especially in an outer layer.

Here is where the comparison gets more interesting. A navy blue fleece jacket with diamond knit fabric is highly breathable in the air-passing sense. That is why it feels lovely when you are walking. It is also why it fails in cold wind. The Pertex face fabric in a 2L construction is less open, but it is designed to let some moisture vapor out while blocking a lot of air. Breathability without protection is just a draft.

So which is more breathable? The fleece is, if you define breathability as air permeability. The Pertex jacket is more useful when the sky is doing something. If you are running in dry cold, fleece is comfortable. If you are walking in wet wind, breathability without protection feels like a draft.

Field jacket vs. warm jacket: the layering reality

The next question is warmth. A 2L Pertex Unlimited field jacket is not an insulated puffer. It is a shell with a collar and pockets. It will not warm you by itself. The navy blue fleece jacket will. Diamond knit fabric traps air, and trapped air is the same thing as insulation. In a cold coffee shop, the fleece wins.

But in the field, jackets are not always worn as a single layer. The Pertex shell becomes the outer roadblock over a fleece or down piece. When I see a stretchy fleece under a shell, it usually fails on fit and fabric quality first: cuffs stretch, zipper plackets twist, and the diamond pattern pills after backpack straps rub against it. A well-constructed diamond-knit fleece can last, but not because the knit structure is clever. It lasts because the yarn quality and factory standards were high.

This is where my quality brain kicks in. I have rejected navy blue fleece bodies where the diamond shape distorted after laundry because the knit tension was uneven. That is not a fabric category problem. It is a manufacturing problem. It is also, too often, a total cost problem.

What about Palace Pertex?

I am asked about Palace Pertex pieces more than I expected. From a fabric perspective, the shell material can be genuine Pertex. From a garment perspective, the priority is different. A streetwear piece may use the same face fabric but skip storm flaps or use a shorter drop tail. That is a choice, not a defect. But do not assume a Palace Pertex jacket has the same weather specification as a dedicated field jacket. Check the hangtag details, not the logo placement.

Total cost: the part where I sound like a purchasing manager

A premium 2L Pertex Unlimited field jacket costs more at the register. A navy blue fleece jacket with diamond knit fabric often costs less. I still tell friends to compare cost per season, not price per unit.

The lower-priced fleece is not automatically cheaper. If it fails twice as fast and requires a replacement in season two, the higher-priced Pertex shell can be lower total cost before you even consider resale value. I have also seen the opposite: an expensive field jacket that sits in a closet because it is unpleasant to move in is the most expensive jacket of all. Value is a ratio of function to cost. It is not a sticker.

When I specify fabrics for a program, I look at wash tests, abrasion data, and seam strength. It costs more to do that testing. It costs much more to skip it. Pertex fabrics usually come with that kind of background data, but the final responsibility is still on the garment maker. A good shell with a bad zipper is still a bad shell.

Which one should you choose?

If you spend most of your time outdoors in damp, gusty conditions, the 2L Pertex Unlimited field jacket is the lower-risk buy. It will block weather and stand up to pack wear. You will still need a midlayer under it when temperatures drop.

If your world is dry and cool, and the wind is not your enemy, choose the navy blue fleece jacket with diamond knit fabric. Make sure it comes from a supplier with consistent dye lots and a stable knit. Then wear it proudly until the weather asks for more.

And if you are only looking at Palace Pertex because of a drop date? That is fine. Buy it for what it is. Just don't mistake a fashion logo for a technical guarantee. The fabric is part of the story, not the whole warranty.

As of early 2025, I am still seeing Pertex used in better-constructed field jackets. I am also seeing fleece quality vary wildly between mills. The label on the collar tells you less than the testing behind it. Ask for the test data. There is no shame in being the buyer who checks.
